When you think about Wiz Khalifa the first two colors that come to mind are probably black and yellow. In all fairness, it’s hard not to when the song of the same title is still in heavy rotation on radio stations that play Top 40. At North Coast though, Wiz Khalifa made it very apparent that there is one color he loves more than either of the Steelers’ colors – green.
Green as in weed. Or dollars… for buying weed. In between lyrical serenades and microphone stand coitus, Khalifa waxed nostalgic about his love for the herb and shawties that had the good shit. The audience (at this point there were as many people packed in front of the Red Bull stage as there were in front of the North Coast stage to see Guetta) was more than happy to rebut Khalifa’s frantic antics with a visual of their own – a cloud of smoke that you could almost literally cut through. Describing the scene as a pot smoking competition would be like calling a Bears/Packers Superbowl a football game. And yet, even though everyone was high as balls by contact alone, no one stopped bouncing or broke for the food lines.
That’s just the kind of show Khalifa puts on. His energy is infectious to the point that it’s intoxicating. The lyrics alone won’t win him a Grammy, but factor in delivery and stage presence and it’s very clear that Khalifa knows how to get everyone on their feet with something to smoke in their hands. If everyone wasn’t already loud enough because of the performance itself, when he said “Make some noise if you smokin’ that good weed out there” the sound of puff, puff, pass was actually audible. Performances like this are how legends are born.
